In my college textbook for Biology of Human Reproduction, one of the first sentences in the Birth Control chapter is "The most reliable method of birth control is abstinence...has the added advantage of preventing transmission of sexually transmitted diseases."
Now, it does go on to talk about other things but that struck me as a little... I don't know.
